How do you use the Reference ID field?

I’m new to using Brightcove and am wondering how others use the Reference ID field for videos. Whether it helps teams to manage videos with a consistent, repeatable data point. I realize it’s a manual-entry field, but it seems like something I might build into a content management best practices doc or some other instructions for our media coordinator. Thanks!

Why use reference IDs?

It is good practice to use reference ID instead of video ID or playlist ID when you can. Some advantages include:

  • You don't have to update all of your publishing embed code if you accidentally delete a video or playlist. Instead, you simply upload another video or re-create a playlist and assign it the same reference ID as the deleted item.
  • It's easy to match up your reference IDs with content IDs when managing your videos and web pages with a content management system (CMS).

For us, we use reference id for mapping id (to keep other video id). And we still use Brightcove video id as the main id.
