Appendix: 2024 State of ASR Report by 3Play Media

Q1: How to Generate a Transcript with Brightcove?

A1: Use the 3Play Media integration with Brightcove. For live events, captions can be automatically generated via 3Play’s Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) or manually through a live captioner. Captions can be displayed on a second screen or within the video stream.

For VOD (Video on Demand): Upload content to Brightcove, tag it for the desired language, and captions are generated through ASR or with human input. The process is automated, and approved captions appear automatically on the video page.

Q2:Difference Between Captions, Subtitles, and Transcripts:

A2:

  • Transcripts are a log of all spoken words in a video, often without timing, and usually delivered as a PDF or Word document.
  • Captions assume the viewer cannot hear the video and include speaker identification and sound descriptions.
  • Subtitles are for viewers who can hear but don’t understand the language, often involving translation.

Q3: How to Ensure Accessibility Compliance Across Regions?

A3: Compliance standards are self-determined based on the region. Customers often use multiple streams to meet regional requirements. For stringent regions, consider delivering content as VOD or simulated live sessions to ensure compliance.

Consult with your accessibility vendor for guidance on regional laws, though final responsibility lies with the customer's legal department.

Q4: How can I improve the Accuracy of Live Captions:

A4: Preparation is key. Providing a word list and speaker names to the captioner can help improve accuracy. This preparation also helps with Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems, which can be tuned to correct specific phrases and formatting issues.

Example of preparation success: Accurate spelling of speaker names in captions during the session due to pre-event preparation.
